Harlington Stake Conference

Stake Conference

We went to Stake Conference on Saturday evening (yesterday) and today.  We are in an incredible Stake, with wonderful people throughout.  Elder Hansen (GA from SLC) came and presided at the meetings.  The talks centered on "staying the course" and "finishing the race" successfully in life.  President Elkins related that Gospel life was similar to the story between the Hare and the Tortoise.  We don't have to be the fastest to finish the race, we just need to stay on the straight and narrow road until we finish "our" race.

Frequent scene of water & palm trees

Earlier this week, we talked to a young man from South America who was just baptized about 2 weeks ago.  He related his conversion experience to us.  He came to the USA through Mexico by himself.  He was dropped off here in Harlingen (after he had crossed the border) and was supposed to be picked-up, but no-one came.  He was all alone in a park and didn't know what to do.
After a while, two Missionary Sisters happened by.  He recognized them because of their Missionary Tags.  His parents, brothers, and sisters had joined the Church when he was a young boy, but he had not.  His parents had always told him that if he needed help that the members of the Church would help him.  The Sisters walked up to him and asked if he needed some help.  He told them that he needed a phone and a place to stay.  They gave him a map to the Library where he could use a phone, $7, and a member's number to call.  He went to the Library and called the member and was given a place to stay.  Later, he wanted to talk to the Missionaries, for he wanted to be baptized.  He knew the Church was true and that the Lord loved him.  So, he took missionary lessons and was baptized a week later.  He has been going with the Elders (Missionaries) and sharing his testimony to others, with hopes of helping them come to a knowledge of God's truth.  After he shared with us his conversion, we felt the Holy Ghost and could see the joy in his face and heart.  He is very humble and thankful to God for guiding him to the true Church.  His story is remarkable.

Water & Cactus

This last week, we have been covering a lot of ground.  We have been trying to meet as many people as we can in each of the two buildings our offices are in.  We have been going to our offices during the day and at night while the YM & YW are in the building.  This has worked well, for we have met many Bishops, Presidents, Counselors, and members who have been referring to us people within their units that need our employment resource help.  One of the Stake Presidency Counselors volunteered to put on a short workshop on self-employment.  This first workshop (Jan. 27th) will be in Brownsville and in Spanish.  In February, he will give a second workshop in Harlingen in English.

Todos son bienvenidos (Everyone is welcome)
We thought we would show you some of the scenery here in Texas.

Sugar cane is a 2-year crop here.
Yes, we like Cactus too.

We are still studying our Spanish, job, and meeting lots of kind and loving people.  Please email us at "clarkida@msn.com"  Really, we won't bite. ........................ Elder/Hermana Clark.
