Texas McAllen Mission (TMM) with all missionaries. Can you see us? |
We spoke in Church last week (01/24/2016) in Brownsville and after the meeting, a member told us he wanted to bring his son to our office so that we could help him find a job. The member came to our office on Monday with his son and we spent the morning helping him find some job leads. It feels so good to help people.

On Tuesday, we went to McAllen to the transfer meeting at the Mission Office. Every 6 weeks, some of the missionaries are transferred to a new area and some go home at the end of their missions. We went to hear the Zetterquists (Employment Specialists in McAllen) give a going home presentation to the missionaries completing their missions. It was about what they need to consider as they go home. Their formula for Happiness is 1) Stay close to the Church and 2) Spend less money than you make. This is great council for anyone, but especially for young returning missionaries. The presentation was also about goals and using time wisely, as they did on their missions. The missionaries were to avoid distractions like X-box, computer, T.V., or anything that would keep them from reaching their goals. We think everyone could use these principles in their lives.

Wednesday night, we hosted a class on Self-Employment in Brownsville. President Paz (Harlingen Stake Presidency) instructed those wanting to start a business how to start, what to do, and what not to do. It was in Spanish so we didn't understand much, but the people who came really appreciated it. Pres. Paz will give the same class in February at the Stake Building (in Harlingen) in English.
Thursday, we met a young man who was directed to our office. Eric was out walking along the road for exercise, when he saw the Church building. He wondered what type of Church it was so he walked around it and saw that it was an LDS Church. He saw a couple of cars parked at the building and decided to go into the Church. He was looking around and found our office with both of us inside it. Tom said "Hello Eric, how are you?" This young man looked like a new convert we knew in Harlingen, but he was from Brownsville. This young man was surprised that we knew his name and he also needed a job. Tom realized his mistake, introduced us as Employment Specialists, and spent some time telling him about employment until his Grandfather (who was a Church member) picked him up.
Eric was surprised that we wanted to help him because he is a member, but less active. He wasn't going to Church because he wasn't paying his tithing and felt uncomfortable going. We helped him with signing up at LDSJOBS, gave him 2 good job leads, talked to him about his schooling, and encouraged him to attend the YSA Ward. When he left with his grandfather, he seemed happy to have met us. We can see that the Lord had inspired and led him to us.

Clarks with Mission Pres. & Sis. Maluenda |
Friday, we went to a Senior Missionary pot luck luncheon at President and Sister Maluenda's Home (our Mission Presidents) in McAllen and to see 3 of the Senior Missionary couples that were completing their missions and going home. The Zetterquists (fellow employment specialists) will be leaving on Feb. 15, 2016, and we will sorely miss them. We ate lunch and had a testimony meeting with all the Senior Couples in the Mission. There were around 30 Seniors at the house, including a CES Missionary Couple that had come from Corpus Christi. We had a picture with Pres. & Sis Maluenda and then a big group picture in front of their home.

After the luncheon, we went back to the Mission Office and picked up cleaning supplies and household items for the younger missionary apartments. The Mission Office had bought the supplies from the apartment inspections we turned in to them the previous week. It felt like Christmas again, giving out irons, mop buckets, silverware, cups, blenders, and even a vacuum. The Missionaries were so happy!
